FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
International travelling artist brings the world to Montreal.
Dutch Artist Denise Buisman Pilger exhibits cityscapes at the Mile End Gallery.
Montreal, March 23, 2011. For the first time in Canada, Montreal-based Dutch artist, Denise Buisman Pilger, will exhibit works from her Travelling the World series in a ten day solo show at Mile End Gallery (5345 Avenue du Parc, Montreal.) The exhibition features surreal interpretations of North American cityscapes, reflecting the artist’s off-beat view of the world she travels. The show runs from April 13 to 23, with a vernissage on Thursday, April 14, 6pm - 9pm.
At home in Montreal since 2009, Denise Buisman Pilger, has travelled extensively, most recently living for three years in Fort Worth, Texas. Her journeys and love of photography have served as inspiration for her unique mixed media and photo collages. Taking major cities as her main focus point, she creates images that feel -surreal and familiar at the same time. “As a traveller you have a unique view of the world because everything you see is new and exciting. In my work I try to exploit that,” says the artist about her oeuvre.
“As a newcomer to Montreal, it’s been a challenging journey to find my place in this city’s busy arts scene. Also, because my origins and some of my professional work have been rooted in Europe, I find myself looking for ways to connect both worlds. Today’s technology, especially social media, makes connecting easy and accessible, no matter where you are. We can travel the world without leaving home, because the world is at our fingertips.”
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Denise has a Bachelors Degree in Illustration from the Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts in Rotterdam. She has an active creative practice that includes contemporary mixed media art pieces, as well as international freelance work in graphic design and art direction in print media.
Having participated in several exhibitions throughout North America, this show offers the rare opportunity of seeing this promising young artist’s works under one roof. The artist will be on-site throughout the exhibition to answer questions and discuss her work. The public is invited to travel the world at Mile-End Gallery, where a whimsical visual universe awaits.
